ABOUT US

The American Society of News Editors focuses on leadership development and journalism-related issues. Founded in 1922 as a nonprofit professional organization, ASNE promotes fair, principled journalism, defends and protects First Amendment rights, and fights for freedom of information and open government. Leadership, innovation, diversity and inclusion in coverage and the journalism work force, opinion journalism, news literacy and the sharing of ideas are also key ASNE initiatives.

Members can be editors, producers or directors in charge of journalistic organizations or departments; opinion journalists; deans or faculty at university journalism schools; leaders and faculty of media-related foundations and training organizations and other individuals at the board's discretion. A committee of the board of directors reviews applications for membership.

ASNE's members are individuals, and its board is elected by members. Many of ASNE's initiatives are carried out by its committees. It also operates projects coordinated by staff with advice from committees and the board.

Teri Hayt became executive director in March 2015. Previously, she was executive editor of GateHouse Media Ohio and managing editor of the Arizona Daily Star. During 35 years in the publishing industry, she has held staff management positions at Time-Life Books, Inc., Sports Illustrated, The San Diego Union, Newsday and The Orlando Sentinel.

Arnie Robbins is senior adviser to ASNE. He was executive director of ASNE from July 2012 to March 2015. A retired editor of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, he had been a longtime member of ASNE before joining the staff.

Megan Schumacher joined the staff in December 2012. She has previous experience designing, editing and writing at newspapers in Missouri and Florida. She is a proud graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism.

Jiyoung Won

Jiyoung Won joined the staff in September 2013. She worked as a news assistant at The Associated Press in Seoul, South Korea, helping the bureau chief and staff reporters with coverage on the Korean Peninsula. She also has experience of page designing, copy editing and writing at the Columbia Missourian. She is a graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism.

Kevin Goldberg

Kevin Goldberg has served as legal counsel to ASNE since 1996. He works closely with the Freedom of Information Committee and writes frequently for the ASNE website and newsletter on free press and open government issues.
